That was a great cover of Otis Redding’s “Pain in My Heart”. Looks like Grace Potter will be in my area the end of this month. I’ll have to see if I can make it to the show.
Very nice. The video is a bit halting right now, but I watched it several times yesterday. I love seeing her joy in performing, even as she conveys the pain.
Am on my fourth listen and this is not meant to take anything away from Grace - am definitely a fan - but this time I hear what I was only getting glimpses of before - I hear Janis.
And that makes me smile - a lot.
Am jealous morewines - really want to see her live - wish her Portsmouth date was a week earlier since would be in MA anyway - two 12 hour round trips in Feb probably not in the cards - hate winter.
Clarification - “heard Janis” the first time - multiple listens just for enjoyment.
Saw a comment that indicated the song was written by a woman took a quick look - -
found Naomi Neville but then discovered that’s actually Allen Toussaint.
Did not know that. That rabbit hole led to learning the song was originally named “Ruler of My Heart” and recorded by Irma Thomas - quite a different feel to her version. Going back to cage and listen to Grace now.
I really regret not getting to see them Saturday night, but like the last time you were going, the weather did not cooperate.
Is it my imagination or are they getting more into the blusey thing? I love blusey Grace & the Nocs but the two times I’ve seen them they rocked it pretty hard.
Feel the Karma wheel turn. Otis did the more famous version of this song, in turn he wrote a little song that was made famous by a female artist. This is a slow pitch and Shouter can’t swing.
Person A wrote song 1. Person B covered song 1 and it is generally considered the most well known version. Person B wrote song 2. Person C covered song 2 and it is most definitely the most well known version. I feel that has a nice Karmic ring, but what you need to figure out, is who person C is and what Song 2 is. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.
Kired, I assume you meant that Shouter couldn’t play this game. Are you thinking of R-E-S-P-E-C-T, written by Otis Redding and #1 hit for Aretha Franklin? A documentary on STAX revealed that Otis wrote it, which was news to me. There is a YouTube clip of him singing it, I think, but I’m too busy (lazy) to look.
Karen and Scout get a cookie, well, a thumbs up anyway. I have always enjoyed the way someone else’s genius can be realized through someone else’s talent.
Over my head that was - agree with kired’s last sentence.
Always facinates me how listening to one artist leads you to another > and another > and so on. Somehow worked my way from Grace’s Workplay set - would love that in mp3 format ( ? ) - through some others to Patti Smith’s “twelve” album with my caffine this morning.
Had a hard time settling on just one teaser -
“But Ulysses remains a book that few have read and appreciated in its entirety — unlike Astral Weeks, which is loved by all decent people who have heard it.”
Forgot something - assume most scroll back through a site anyway but just in case -
there is a Jan 14 entry on Van Morrison’s new album coming out in March.
“KEEP IT SIMPLE is Morrison’s first album of new material since 2005, and the first in several years in which he penned all 11 songs specifically for one album.”
Done with my hi-jacking now - sorry Shouter - well, a little anyway
Shouter,
realize you’ve been pretty busy but please don’t go away.
GPTN’s live at Workplay is incredible and is a perfect way for your “student” to try and convince more people that she is a gifted artist. A little gentle nudging here are there to capture attention - play it forward so to speak ? okay that’s a *groan*
But hope you aren’t going to stop sharing your wit and wisdom on other subjects with us ?
For example
Cat Power’s new album “Jukebox ”
Van Morrison re-releasing two albums - WTH is that about ? A build up to his new one in March maybe ?
Going back to my boring paperwork with fingers crossed - - damn it’s hard to type this way ! …………………………………..
Van Morrison just re-issued SIX older albums, AH. And there is a 3-CD version of the Still On Top greatest hits collection coming on the heels of the new album next month.
Sorry no blog - am making my case on a message board I’m not sure I should link here.
Someone is starting a new blog soon though and is looking for guest writers - not sure why I was asked or if I want to try it since I even bore myself most of the time :[
You can reach me through kired’s or don’t mind if Shouter gives you my email.
SIX ? ? Really ! - only knew about Tupelo Honey and the remastered It’s Too Late To Stop Now
So why all the reissue activity do you think ?
Since this is a post about Grace Potter, I think it would probably be inappropriate to change the discussion direction and talk about Van Morrison too much. Maybe when you get going at Someone’s New Blog, there will be ample opportunity to discuss the whys and hows of album reissues, of which there are many.
Correcting my bad manners - had already picked up the download but appreciate you posting it here.
Highly recommend everyone who drops by take the time to download GPTN’s Workply file Shouter posted up-thread - - their live set is amazing and the sound quality is excellent.
I downloaded the file yesterday, but it won’t open in my Windows Media Player so I’m trying to figure out how to unzip it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I’ve given up on the zip folder. My computer doesn’t have the right software, and I don’t feel free to add things; so it’s part of the price I pay for my quasi-luddite bent.
I hope Shouter doesn’t mind me commenting on the Cat Power CD. I listened to samples on Amazon and on iTunes, but couldn’t get a good feel for the songs from them. So I downloaded “Blue” and “Don’t Explain.” I had never heard “Blue” before Shouter posted it here by Joni Mitchell. Now I’m hung on that version and don’t care for CP’s jazzy take on it. “Don’t Explain,” however,is really nice — voice, piano, bass, drums, and steel guitar(?).
I’m eagerly awaiting Van’s new CD. It’s already in my cart.
Unfortunately, I paid way too much for Astral Weeks and It’s Too Late To Stop Now on ebay. Oh well. I think there are some other older ones that are being re-released that I don’t have.
I’m no computer wizard, by any means, but I think you can go to http://winzip.com and get a download to use. I believe it’s a trial only version, but it will unzip your files. Shouter, correct me if I’m wrong, then bang me over the head.

WOW nice cover, thanks for that one.I owe it to you for finding her.
Watched pot theory at work - glad to see you back

It’s not your imagination, check out almost an entire show from Workplay on YouTube
You’ll see “Treat Me Right”, “Apologies”, “Falling or Flying”, “Angel Band”, “Jet Airliner”, and “Big White Gate”
All much “bluesier” feeling.
Feel the Karma wheel turn. Otis did the more famous version of this song, in turn he wrote a little song that was made famous by a female artist. This is a slow pitch and Shouter can’t swing.
Can’t swing? I can’t even follow the logic.

C = Aretha Franklin
2 = Respect
You all might find this interesting.

But I digress - as usual - - came over to share a blog link up on a site I frequent - found the thoughts in this piece interesting - “40th Anniversary Appreciation of Astral Weeks ”

Inappropriate? And here I thought I was simply an enabler.
The Workplay set - zipped MP3’s. Uploading on Saturday morning, should be ready by the afternoon.
“And here I thought I was simply an enabler.”
You always have been - - one of your very best traits IMHO

GC, did you fall off the face of the earth again?
