The Original

Ron Sexsmith (Sorry, no embedding)

Feist on Carson Daly

While the Feist version is excellent I gotta go with Ron. One of the few singers who consistently sounds like he is going to break apart at any moment.

Plus, Ron doing “Words We Never Use”

and, “Speaking With The Angels”

These are all beautiful. Wonderful lyrics — they touch the heart.

Afraid I have to go with Feist on Secret Heart. The first time I heard Feist sing
it I stopped in my tracks.

While looking for lyrics, I came across this interview:

Hey, Shouter, don’t forget the truly crappy version of “Secret Heart” by Rod Stewart. Song-decimation raised to an art-form.

Off topic, but . . . I downloaded some songs from iTunes (including Ron Sexsmith and Grace Potter, thank you very much), one of which was Wilco’s “I Want to Break Your Heart,” which I haven’t heard in a long time. Listening to it, the term “Aquarium Drinker” made me think of the “Aquarium Drunkard” link here, so I checked it out just now; and I’m so excited because the top story was about Wilco taping a new show for Austin City Limits to air in November. There are two MP3’s there for download as well.

All week I’ve been rewatching the 2004 Wilco ACL appearance that includes “At Least That’s What You Said.” That performance was my introduction to Wilco, and it blew me away (their new CD is much gentler). Here’s the best YouTube clip I could find:

This is the second serendipitous thing to occur for me in as many days – yesterday’s may have not been for the good though; some things just can’t be known.

Didn’t realize you were “back”, dear Shouter.

I never like Ron….sorry. Feist, however, is a different story. I really like her gee-tarness.

OBC — Seems that the “kindler, gentler” Rod leaves something to be desired. Where’s the raucous Rod of Tonight’s the Night and Hot Legs? I guess turning 60 requires some mellowation.

Been listening to those “Cold Turkey Time Blues”

    Me too, in spades.
